Dr. Inge-Marie Eigsti is a Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Connecticut, where she directs the Connecticut Autism and Language Lab. Her research addresses the fundamental challenge of mapping complex behavioral constructs in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to brain mechanisms, focusing on low-level cognitive processes like working memory and auditory processing. These investigations aim to connect genetic, neuroimaging, and behavioral domains to understand ASD pathology.
Her research interests span multiple domains including:
- Psycholinguistics in autism spectrum disorders
- Optimal outcomes in ASD and neuroplasticity
- Hyperlexia and savant musical skills
- fMRI applications in cognitive neuroscience
- Auditory processing and sensory integration
- Neurodevelopmental trajectories across the lifespan
Analysis of her publication history reveals strong focus on autism spectrum disorder across multiple dimensions: neurophysiological processing (25%), clinical/diagnostic considerations (20%), language/communication studies (20%), cross-cultural and sociodemographic factors (15%), and comorbid conditions/behavioral management (20%). Her work consistently employs multimodal methodologies including neuroimaging, behavioral assessment, and systematic reviews.
Dr. Eigsti teaches undergraduate courses in Abnormal Psychology and Autism and Developmental Disorders, and graduate courses in Cognitive Assessment and Language Acquisition. She leads multiple research initiatives including the ASD Long-Term Outcomes Study, SOUND Project (Study of Auditory Neural Discrimination), and The Connect Project, while also directing training programs in Cognitive Neuroscience of Communication (CNC-CT) and LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities).
Her laboratory acknowledges working on territories of the Mohegan, Mashantucket Pequot, Eastern Pequot, Schaghticoke, Golden Hill Paugussett, Nipmuc, and Lenape Peoples.
