Inga Marie Nilsson was a pioneering researcher at Lund University's Faculty of Medicine, affiliated with the Department of Clinical Sciences in Malmö. Her groundbreaking work on blood coagulation mechanisms earned international acclaim, particularly for developing a life-saving treatment for a previously unknown form of hemophilia in 1956. She collaborated closely with chemists Birger and Margareta Blombäck, and her mentor Professor Jan Waldenström, who recognized her potential early in her career.
Her research laid the foundation for understanding coagulation factors, including the later discovery and commercialization of Factor VII by her student Ulla Hedner. Nilsson’s contributions transformed hemophilia treatment and influenced interdisciplinary research at Malmö General Hospital, notably in clinical chemistry and translational medicine.
Though no formal awards are explicitly listed, her work established the Malmö Clinic as a global leader in coagulation research. Her legacy includes advancing both basic science and clinical applications, such as Warfarin mechanism elucidation and hereditary blood disorder studies led by Carl-Bertil Laurell’s team.
