Ineke Sluiter

Ineke Sluiter is a Professor at Leiden University, specializing in Greek Language and Literature within the Centre for the Arts in Society. Her research bridges classical antiquity and contemporary societal issues, as evidenced by recent media engagements and publications.

Sluiter’s research focuses on Classical Philology, Ancient Greek Etymology, and the Philosophy of Language, with particular emphasis on Plato’s Cratylus and its implications for understanding ancient and modern linguistic thought. Her work also explores the application of classical narratives to modern debates, such as migration policy and gender perspectives in mythology.

In 2024, she received the Art and Science Medal of Honor for her contributions to bridging classical scholarship with public discourse. Her recent publication (2025) on Plato’s Cratylus highlights her expertise in Ancient and Medieval Greek etymology, supported by funding from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) (Grant 024.003.012).
