Dr. Inanc Birol is a Professor in the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia (UBC), holding adjunct positions in Computer Science, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC, and the BC Centre for Disease Control. His research focuses on bioinformatics tools for genomic analysis, with major contributions to genome assembly, antimicrobial resistance studies, and cancer genomics. He directs the Bioinformatics Technology Lab and a wet lab at BC CDC, developing methods for long-read sequencing and clinical diagnostics. Notable achievements include top 1% global citation status and over 140 publications.
Research interests include:
- Clinical bioinformatics pipelines for cancer and rare disease diagnosis
- Alternative polyadenylation analysis in cancer cohorts
- Antimicrobial peptide discovery from natural sources
- Genomic resource development for spruce trees
- Long-read sequencing tools (Tigmint, ntEdit, ORCA)
His work bridges computational and experimental methods, with projects spanning medical genetics, computational biology, and environmental genomics. The ORCA bioinformatics environment he co-developed provides scalable tools for researchers and educators.
Key awards: Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher (2018).
Labs: Bioinformatics Technology Lab (UBC), BC CDC antimicrobial resistance lab. Collaborations include major institutions across Canada and international projects like cancer genome initiatives.
