Imrul Kayes is a PhD Researcher in the Department of Economics at Monash University, Australia. He commenced his PhD in February 2023 and is co-supervised by Professor Liang Wang Choon. His work focuses on development economics, poverty and inequality, and cost-effective educational interventions.

Research Interests: Imrul investigates development economics challenges, particularly poverty and inequality in South Asia. His focus includes scalable, cost-effective educational solutions for underprivileged girls and youth, with field experiments in India and Bangladesh. Collaborations with institutions like NYU Abu Dhabi, LSE, and Bangladeshi government agencies highlight his applied approach.
Grants & Collaborations: Imrul secured a 2024 USD 250,000 grant from Echidna Giving as co-PI for an educational initiative in India. He also works on randomized trials with Bangladeshi government bodies (Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education) to assess online learning platforms and low-cost interventions like umbrella provision for adolescent girls.
Public Service & Voluntary Roles: Prior to his PhD, Imrul held roles such as Deputy Director (2020–2022) in the Anti-Corruption Commission, Bangladesh, and Project Coordinator (2017–2019) at the UNDP. He currently serves as PhD Student Representative at Monash University.
