Imran Malik is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at The University of Western Australia's School of Agriculture and Environment. His research focuses on plant stress physiology, particularly abiotic/biotic stress responses in crops like wheat, legumes, and cassava. He leads cassava-based cropping systems research in Southeast Asia for CGIAR's Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, emphasizing climate resilience and smallholder farmer livelihoods. Key projects include cassava disease management and clean seed technology in Cambodia and Laos.
Malik holds a PhD from UWA (2003) and has conducted research globally, including Japan (JSPS fellowship) and Bangladesh. He collaborates with institutions like Nagoya University and Copenhagen University on projects addressing waterlogging, salinity tolerance, and nitrogen use efficiency. Current roles include Section Editor for Plant and Soil and leadership in cassava-focused initiatives.
Research expertise spans agronomy, plant physiology, and soil fertility. Notable contributions include identifying stress-tolerant crop varieties, optimizing fertilizer use in cassava systems, and developing rapid stem multiplication techniques. His work aligns with UN SDGs 2 (Zero Hunger) and 13 (Climate Action).
Key publications (2021-2025) explore waterlogging tolerance in legumes, cassava disease dynamics, and crop rotation benefits. Supervised over 4 graduate students, with ongoing projects funded by ACIAR and CAVAC programs.
