Prof. Ilze Akota is the Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Medicine at Riga Stradins University. She holds a Professorship specializing in craniofacial anomalies, particularly cleft lip and palate. Her research focuses on surgical protocols, tissue regeneration, and clinical outcomes in maxillofacial surgery. She has extensive expertise as a Clinical Medicine expert with the Latvian Council of Science (2016–2025).
Her research interests include cleft lip/palate treatment optimization, periodontal regeneration techniques, and autotransplantation efficacy. She leads projects investigating genetic and molecular factors in craniofacial defects, with notable contributions to 3D-printing applications in surgery. She has advised 4 PhD candidates and contributed to 172 publications.
