Ilya Vilinsky serves as Education Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cincinnati and has directed the Undergraduate Neuroscience Major since 2009. Previously a Field Service Assistant Professor (2008-2009), he designs neuroscience curricula across three tracks and advises students on academic/career paths while bridging undergraduate programs with College of Medicine research divisions.
Education
- Ph.D. in Neurobiology and Behavior, Cornell University (2003)
Research Focus: His work centers on Drosophila neurobiology, investigating neuromuscular junctions, mushroom body organization, and synaptic transmission mechanisms through molecular genetic approaches. Teaching integrates these themes into core courses like Neurophysiology Laboratory and Drugs/Disease in the Brain.
Publication Trends: 2002-2004 works reveal consistent Drosophila neuroscience specialization spanning neuroanatomy, synaptic genetics, and neural development—highlighting molecular mechanisms underlying neuromuscular and cognitive functions in model organisms.
Awards
- Darwin T. Turner Faculty Award (2010)
Grants & Service: As Principal Investigator, secured NSF grant #DUE-1044643 ($199,968) for Molecular Genetics in Neurophysiology Laboratories. Current service includes Undergraduate Council Committee membership, Choose Ohio First Scholarship administration, Neuroscience Center Advisory Board representation, and NeuroSociety faculty mentorship since 2009.
Academic Leadership: Teaches Principles of Neurobiology, Drugs/Disease in the Brain, and capstone research courses while guiding 100+ neuroscience majors annually through individualized academic planning and research opportunities.
