Ilya CUYPERS

Ilya Cuypers is a Full-time Professor of Strategic Management at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University. He holds the rank of Lee Kong Chian Professor and serves as Area Coordinator for Strategy & Entrepreneurship. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Management and multiple master’s degrees from Tilburg University, Netherlands. He has held progressive roles from Assistant Professor (2008–2016) to Associate Professor (2016–2024) before his current position since 2025.

Professor Cuypers’ research focuses on strategic management, international business, and governance mechanisms. Key areas include cross-border acquisitions, collaborative ventures, transaction cost theory, and organizational learning. He has contributed extensively to journals like the Journal of International Business Studies and Strategic Management Journal, with over 20 refereed publications since 2006. His work explores topics such as cultural distance, trust in international joint ventures, and the role of CSR in strategic alliances.

He has received numerous accolades, including the Academy of International Business Best Reviewer Award (2015), Strategic Management Society Best Paper awards (2012, 2014), and multiple teaching honors at SMU. He serves on editorial boards for Journal of International Business Studies and Global Strategy Journal. His research emphasizes bridging macro and micro theories, with recent studies addressing nationalism’s impact on global strategies and governance choices in volatile environments.
