Ilona Rissanen is a Research Fellow at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and the Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Programme. Her research focuses on structural biology, virology, and zoonoses, with expertise in macromolecular crystallography and virus entry mechanisms.
She has led projects funded by the Research Council of Finland and the University of Helsinki, including studies on SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors and hantavirus-host interactions. Her work spans molecular-level analyses of viral glycoproteins, neutralization strategies, and evolutionary insights into ancient viruses.
Her recent publications highlight structural studies of rabies and SARS-CoV-2 neutralization, cryo-EM analysis of viral proteins, and antigenic site validation for hantaviruses. These works intersect virology, immunology, and computational biology.
- Young Virologist of the Year (2018)
Rissanen has organized and participated in the Virus Club seminar series and collaborated with institutions like the University of Oxford. She supervises doctoral students in Clinical Veterinary Medicine and Microbiology & Biotechnology.
