Dr. Ilknur Aktan is an Associate Professor of Veterinary Anatomy at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Surrey, within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She holds a DVM from Istanbul University (1999) and a PhD in Veterinary Microbiology from the University of Liverpool (2006), funded by Defra. Her career spans research in E. coli pathogenesis, antimicrobial properties of equine platelets, and veterinary education pedagogy.
Her research focuses on veterinary microbiology (e.g., E. coli O157:H7, pathogen-host interactions), anatomical teaching methodologies, and student well-being. She contributes to the BVMSci curriculum, emphasizing clinical skills integration between preclinical and clinical anatomy. Dr. Aktan is a Senior Tutor and Section Lead for Molecular and Cellular Biology at Surrey.
Her publications span 1999–2016, addressing topics like equine platelet function, E. coli virulence mechanisms, and veterinary education. She has held roles at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency and Royal Veterinary College before joining Surrey in 2014.
