Ilkka Törmä is a university lecturer at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Turku, Finland. He holds a PhD in Mathematics and is recognized as a Docent in Discrete Mathematics.
His research focuses on cellular automata dynamics, particularly long-term behavior, nilpotency, limit sets and randomization in one-dimensional infinite cellular automata. He also investigates multidimensional symbolic dynamics, examining structural properties of shift spaces of finite type and sofic shifts, with emphasis on the relationship between structure and computability. A significant aspect of his work involves computational methods in discrete dynamical systems theory.
Törmä is a co-developer of Diddy, a software package for multidimensional symbolic dynamics and cellular automata theory, and has contributed to the Griddy Python toolbox for analysis of infinite graphs and discrete dynamical systems. His GitHub activity shows recent commits as recently as June 2025, indicating ongoing active research.
His teaching portfolio includes Geometria (since 2018), Analytical Geometry (since 2020), Mathematics Demonstration Course (starting 2025), Basic Algebra I (2023-2025), Basic Algebra II (2017), and Foundations of Abstract Mathematics (2016).
