Dr. Ilkka Heinonen serves as Docent (Associate Professor) in the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Turku's Faculty of Medicine and holds an Academy Research Fellowship at the Turku PET Centre. His research bridges exercise physiology, metabolic health, and cardiovascular function with clinical applications.
His investigations focus on physiological limits of cardiac output during maximal exercise, molecular mechanisms of diabetes (including the FoxO1-zDHHC4-CD36 S-acylation axis), and metabolic consequences of sedentary behavior. Using advanced PET imaging techniques, he examines skeletal muscle perfusion, liver lipid metabolism, and renal glucose uptake in response to physical activity interventions.
Dr. Heinonen's 2025 publications reveal a strong translational focus across exercise physiology, metabolic disorders, and molecular cardiology. His work consistently connects basic mechanisms with clinical outcomes through randomized controlled trials and molecular analyses.
His scientific recognition includes the prestigious Academy Research Fellowship from the Academy of Finland:
- Academy Research Fellowship (Academy of Finland)
As an Academy Research Fellow, Dr. Heinonen leads projects at the Turku PET Centre with active grants supporting human and animal studies. His collaborative network spans multiple institutions, with recent publications featuring national and international co-authors across cardiology, endocrinology, and oncology research domains.
The Turku PET Centre provides state-of-the-art infrastructure for Dr. Heinonen's research, specializing in positron emission tomography for metabolic and cardiovascular phenotyping in both clinical and preclinical settings.
