Dr. Ilker Kalkan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Middle East Technical University. He received his B.Sc. from Middle East Technical University in 2004 and completed his M.Sc. and Ph.D. at Georgia Institute of Technology (2006 and 2009), focusing on the lateral stability of reinforced concrete beams under Georgia Department of Transportation funding. His research centers on structural engineering, with emphasis on reinforced concrete, steel structures, and seismic resilience.
- Structural Behavior of Beams
- Composite Material Applications
- Seismic Performance Evaluation
- Concrete Technology Innovations
- Stability and Buckling Analysis
His 15 most recent publications highlight trends in structural engineering, including shear and bending mechanics of reinforced concrete beams with openings, hybrid FRP-steel reinforcement, lateral torsional buckling of steel and concrete elements, and sustainable use of waste materials in concrete. He has taught foundational courses like Reinforced Concrete, Steel Structures, and Structural Analysis, while publishing in top-tier journals such as the American Concrete Institute Structural Journal and Engineering Structures. Despite no explicit awards or advisees listed, his work bridges experimental and theoretical approaches in structural integrity and material optimization.
