Prof. dr. Ilja van Beest is a Full Professor of Social Psychology at Tilburg University, affiliated with the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. He obtained his PhD from Leiden University in 2001 and has been at Tilburg since 2009. His research focuses on group and interpersonal processes, including coalition formation, ostracism, fairness, and trust. He serves as editor-in-chief of Social Influence and is a member of prominent organizations like the Kurt Lewin Institute, where he acts as research director.
Van Beest teaches courses on social psychology, group dynamics, and leadership. His recent work explores topics such as intuitive thinking’s role in physiognomy beliefs, coping strategies for social exclusion, and privacy trade-offs in app adoption. He has received notable awards, including the Ig Nobel Prize for his research on symptom attribution. His contributions bridge experimental social psychology with real-world applications, emphasizing collaborative and ethical decision-making processes.
