Ilari Taskinen is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Tampere University’s Faculty of Social Sciences, specializing in the history of private and collective war experiences during World War II. His research focuses on wartime letter writing, soldiers’ life courses, and the application of digital methods to historical analysis. He leads the 'DIGIKÄKI – Digital History and Handwritten Sources' project and contributes to the 'Unequal War' and 'TREES' projects examining the social and biological impacts of war stress.
Key research topics include the social and cultural history of WWII, digitization of historical sources, and demographic consequences of conflict. He has published extensively on Finnish soldiers’ epistolary relationships, wartime demographics, and the intersection of digital humanities with historical research.
Taskinen’s work bridges traditional historical methods with computational analysis, particularly through the Finnish Army WWII Database and studies of emotional expression in digitized letters. His interdisciplinary approach addresses both historical phenomena and their contemporary interpretation through new technologies.
