Dr. Ilana Webster-Kogen is Joe Loss Reader in Jewish Music at SOAS University of London, specializing in music, diaspora, and ethnicity in Middle Eastern urban contexts. She holds appointments in both the School of Arts and School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics.
Research Focus: Diasporic musical practices with projects exploring Moroccan Torah scroll circulation networks and soundscapes of contested urban spaces. Award-winning monograph Citizen Azmari analyzes Ethiopian music in Tel Aviv.
Current Projects:
- Triangular migration of sacred texts between North Africa, France and Israel
- Manshiyya neighborhood sound mapping (Tel Aviv-Jaffa border)
Honors: Society for Ethnomusicology's Jewish Music Prize (2019) for Citizen Azmari: Making Ethiopian Music in Tel Aviv.
