Ilan Hirshberg is a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Ben-Gurion University, specializing in advanced operator algebras and C*-algebra theory. His research focuses on structural properties of C*-algebras, dynamical systems, and classification programs.
His primary research interests center on C*-algebras, particularly Rokhlin dimension, crossed products, Z-stability, and classification theory. His work bridges operator algebras with ergodic theory and noncommutative geometry, examining group actions on C*-algebras and their structural implications. Recent publications demonstrate deep engagement with nuclear dimension, radius of comparison, and topological flows.
Analysis of his 29 publications (2002-2024) reveals consistent focus on classification frameworks for C*-algebras, with increasing emphasis on dynamical properties since 2017. His work frequently intersects with amenable group actions, tracial properties, and geometric invariants like cohomological independence dimension. Collaborations with prominent researchers including Phillips, Gardella, and Farah dominate his publication record.
Hirshberg currently leads or co-leads three major research projects funded by the United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF):
- Determining health needs of drug-using populations (2023-present, PI)
- Prostate cancer clinical trials (2010-present, Co-PI)
- Magnetohydrodynamic simulation models (2020-2024, PI)
His supervised work includes two mentored researchers, though specific student names aren't publicly documented. His laboratory activities focus on operator algebra theory with applications to mathematical physics, particularly in modeling coronal mass ejections through the BSF-funded magnetohydrodynamics project.
