Ilan Chet is a Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology. He served as Vice President for Research and Development (1992–2001) and Dean (1986–1989) at Hebrew University, President of the Weizmann Institute (2001–2006), and Deputy Secretary General for Higher Education and Research in the Union for the Mediterranean (2010). He was also a Visiting Professor at Rutgers University (1995–2008) and a Senior Scientist at DuPont (Delaware, USA).
- Doctoral work in microbiology at Hebrew University of Jerusalem
His research focuses on the biological control of plant diseases using environment-friendly microorganisms to reduce pesticide use. He has published over 390 articles, edited five books, and holds 38 patents. His work spans agricultural biotechnology, fungal-plant interactions, and molecular mechanisms of biocontrol agents.
His publications emphasize microbiology, plant pathology, and agricultural biotechnology, with key contributions on Trichoderma species, chitinase promoters, lectin-based recognition, and saline stress tolerance in plants. Trends include biocontrol agent development, gene regulation in fungal interactions, and biotechnology applications for sustainable agriculture.
