Dr. Iker Erdocia Iniguez is an Assistant Professor and Director of Research at the School of Applied Language & Intercultural Studies (SALIS) at Dublin City University (DCU). He previously served as Director of the PhD Programme and currently acts as Research Integrity Advocate for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Before joining DCU, he was an Invited Lecturer at Université de Montréal (2013–2016). His roles also include membership in the ADAPT Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology (SFI), the Institute for Future Media Democracy and Society (FuJo), and leadership in the Horizon Europe FOSTERLANG project, focusing on minoritized languages and digital exclusion. He actively engages with public policy through organizations like the Irish Association for Applied Linguistics and the NGO New Communities Partnership.
His research focuses on language policy, sociolinguistics, and their intersections with education and politics. Key interests include language rights, migration-related language barriers, and the impact of technology on language governance. Erdocia has supervised six PhD students (two completed, four ongoing) exploring topics like language teacher training, corpus linguistics, and discourse analysis.
Erdocia’s work is funded by Horizon Europe, the Irish Research Council, and the Royal Irish Academy/British Academy. His peer-reviewed publications span journals such as Language Policy, Journal of Sociolinguistics, and Higher Education, addressing issues like language in AI ethics, multilingual education policies, and gender-neutral language debates. His 2018 book on language teacher education earned the ASELE PhD award for best dissertation.
He currently leads the Counteracting digital exclusion work package in FOSTERLANG, developing IT tools for lesser-used languages. His awards include the ASELE PhD Prize (2017) and the Spanish Lecturer Grant (2013).
