Igor Tascón

Igor Tascón is an Ikerbasque Research Fellow and group leader of the Membrane Transport Mechanisms laboratory at the Biofisika Institute (CSIC, EHU), located at the Science Park of the University of the Basque Country in Leioa, Spain. He is actively involved in cutting-edge research on solute transport across biological membranes linked to human disease.

His research focuses on the structural and functional analysis of transmembrane complexes, particularly using electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) to determine high-resolution structures of membrane proteins and macromolecular assemblies. His expertise spans membrane protein biochemistry, structural biology, and the use of membrane-mimicking environments for protein stabilization.

Igor Tascón received his academic training at the University of the Basque Country, where he earned a BSc in Chemistry, an MSc in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine, and a PhD in Biochemistry. Prior to joining the Biofisika Institute in 2019, he conducted postdoctoral research at Helsinki University, focusing on tyrosine kinase receptors and protein engineering for NMR, followed by four years at Goethe Frankfurt University studying K⁺ transporters and membrane protein stabilization techniques.

As a principal investigator, he leads an independent research group dedicated to elucidating the molecular mechanisms of membrane transport. His work bridges biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology to understand disease-related transport processes.

He is affiliated with the Biofisika Institute, a joint research center of CSIC and the University of the Basque Country, which supports interdisciplinary training and research in biophysics and molecular biosciences.
