His research focuses on modern Chinese history, particularly Qing and 20th-century cultural and social developments, including opera, religion, popular culture, and performing arts. He also explores global colonial and imperial history, the Cold War in Asia, and the historical culture of communist Eastern Europe. His interdisciplinary approach integrates cultural history, historical anthropology, and urban studies.
His recent publications reveal a strong thematic focus on cultural expression in Sichuan—especially opera and boatmen’s songs—as sites of state reform, urban imagination, and social memory. These works bridge Chinese studies with broader global historical narratives, such as cross-cultural trade in Ayutthaya and transnational communist interpretations of revolution. His scholarship combines archival depth with theoretical innovation in cultural and urban history.
He is currently working on a project titled The Foothold: China, Southeast Asia, and the Global Revolution at the Margins, 1945–1954, which promises to expand his contribution to global revolutionary and Cold War studies.
