Prof. Ignas Snellen is a Professor of Astronomy at Leiden University, The Netherlands. His research focuses on exoplanet atmospheres, isotopic analysis, and the search for life-supporting conditions beyond Earth. He transitioned from galactic studies to exoplanets during his postdoctoral work in Cambridge and Edinburgh, driven by a lifelong passion for astronomy since childhood.
Snellen's work involves analyzing planetary spectra using advanced telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope and the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). He emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, citing the University of Bern's Center for Space and Habitability (CSH) as a model for integrating astronomy, physics, biology, and chemistry. He received the 2019 Hans Sigrist Prize for his contributions to exoplanet research, with funds directed toward early-stage instrument development.
Current projects include studying isotope ratios in exoplanet atmospheres to infer planetary evolution and potential biosignatures like oxygen. Snellen advises aspiring scientists to pursue their passions, noting strong career prospects in STEM fields.
