Prof. Ignas Snellen is a Professor of Observational Astrophysics and Scientific Director at Leiden Observatory, part of Leiden University's Faculty of Science. His research focuses on extrasolar planets, developing techniques to study exoplanet atmospheres and climates using ground-based telescopes. Key achievements include pioneering high-dispersion spectroscopy methods and detecting carbon monoxide and water vapor in exoplanet atmospheres.
Education: PhD in Astronomy (Leiden University, 1997), followed by postdoctoral roles at the University of Cambridge and University of Edinburgh before returning to Leiden in 2004.
Major awards include the NWO Spinoza Prize (2022), ERC Advanced Grant (2016), and Hans Sigrist Prize (2019). His work contributes to the search for Earth-like planets using next-generation telescopes like the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT).
Leading a dynamic research group, Snellen oversees projects such as the MASCARA camera system and collaborates internationally via ESO telescopes. His team includes multiple PhD candidates and alumni, advancing interdisciplinary astrophysics.
