Idil Cetin is a Researcher at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas at the University of Oslo. Her work focuses on the social, cultural, and political dimensions of photography in the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, particularly its role in diaspora formation and historical memory. She holds a PhD from Galatasaray University (2018) and has taught at TOBB University as a part-time lecturer. Currently, she leads the Marie Skłodowska-Curie post-doctoral project "Histories of Reception of Photography in the Ottoman Empire," examining how diverse groups engaged with the photographic medium during Ottoman modernization.
Her research interests include the Armenian diaspora, archival studies, and material culture. Notable contributions include analyzing Atatürk's photographic legacy and the socio-economic roles of Armenian photographers post-1915. She has published widely in journals such as Archives and Records and Participation: International Journal of Audience Research, and is preparing a monograph on Atatürk's visual imagery.
