Ida Helene Asmussen serves as Associate Professor at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen. With a background spanning both practical legal work and academic research, she brings unique perspective to her examination of justice processes. Her academic journey began with a B.A. in Nordic Philology (1995) followed by a Cand. Jur. degree (2003), both from the University of Copenhagen. After gaining practical experience as a mediator and legal consultant, she pursued her PhD at the Law Faculty (2010-2013) and has since held academic positions including Postdoc (2014-2017) and Assistant Professor (2017-2019) before her current role as Associate Professor.
- 1995: B.A. in Nordic Philology, University of Copenhagen
- 2003: Cand. Jur., University of Copenhagen
Professor Asmussen's research centers on conflict resolution, particularly in criminal cases and restorative justice practices. Her work examines how victims navigate the justice system, the dynamics of victim-offender mediation, and the conceptual frameworks that shape legal processes. She approaches these topics through interdisciplinary lenses combining law, sociology, and philosophy, with particular attention to power dynamics, identity construction, and emotional processing within legal contexts. Her doctoral research identified distinct participant positions including 'the altruistic victim,' 'the therapeutic victim,' 'the uncompromising victim,' 'the exemplary offender,' and 'the resentful offender,' analyzing how these roles operate within what she terms a 'confessional ethos' in restorative justice practices.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on mediation practices, victim experiences, and the theoretical underpinnings of restorative justice. The research demonstrates an evolution from theoretical examinations of mediation frameworks toward more applied studies of specific legal contexts including family law, criminal justice procedures, and the impact of digitalization on legal practice. A consistent thread throughout her work is the examination of how individuals construct identity and meaning within structured legal processes.
- Grant from Carlsberg Foundation (2017) for the 'Understanding Threats' research project
- Grant from Scandinavian Research Council for Criminology (2018)
- Research integration grant with Lin Adrian (2021)
Professor Asmussen actively supervises PhD students and serves on evaluation committees, as evidenced by her role as chair for Mathilde Worch Jensen's PhD defense. Her research is supported by significant grants including funding from Offerfonden and the Ministry of Justice for her collective research project on victims' experiences in the Danish justice system, and from Carlsbergfonden for the interdisciplinary 'Understanding Threats' project. She collaborates extensively with researchers across Scandinavia and Europe while maintaining practical connections through her role as conflict resolution mediator with North Zealand Police since 2019.
She is an active member of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of Law and participates in multiple research teams examining the intersection of law with other disciplines. Her work connects theoretical legal scholarship with practical mediation experience, creating a valuable bridge between academic research and real-world justice processes.
