Their research integrates molecular approaches with field studies to explore phylogenetic relationships, biogeography, and evolutionary processes in lichens, ferns, gymnosperms, and flowering plants.
- Key Research Areas: Macroevolutionary processes, Eastern Asian–Western North American floristic patterns, trait evolution, plant-animal interactions, niche dynamics, and Arctic biology.
Scientific Recognition: Awarded the Charles Edwin Bessie Teaching Award by the Botanical Society of America for excellence in teaching systematic botany.
Students: Mentored Ph.D. student Else Demeulenaere, whose work intersects biogeography, ethnoecology, and social justice, and former student Celia Hampton Miller, a co-author on the Compendium of Alaska Lichens.
