Ibrahim Karaman is a Professor and Department Head in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at Texas A&M University. He is also a Regents Professor and has received prestigious awards including the NSF CAREER Award and TMS Robert Lansing Hardy Award.
- Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign – 2000
- M.S., Mechanical Engineering, Bogazici University – 1996
- B.S., Mechanical Engineering, Bogazici University – 1995
His research focuses on processing-microstructure-mechanical property relationships in advanced metallic materials, including shape memory alloys (Ni-Ti, Co-Ni-Al, Ni-Mn-Ga), ultrafine-grained/nanocrystalline materials, and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steels. Key methodologies involve severe plastic deformation, magneto-thermo-mechanical testing, and computational modeling.
Recent publications highlight innovations in additive manufacturing of functionally graded alloys, thermomechanical work efficiency of high-temperature shape memory alloys, and data-driven alloy discovery using Bayesian optimization. Collaborations span national laboratories, NASA, and universities in Germany, Japan, Spain, and Turkey.
- Robert Lansing Hardy Award – 2005
- Texas Engineering Experiment Station Select Young Faculty Award – 2002
- NSF CAREER Award – 2001
Karaman’s group investigates materials combining dislocation slip, martensitic transformation, and deformation twinning. Funding sources include NSF, AFOSR, ARL, NASA, and QNRF. His students and collaborators have contributed to studies on nanocrystalline metals, actuation fatigue, and microstructure-based crystal plasticity models.
