Dr. Ibrahim Cindark is a Researcher in the Pragmatics Department at the Leibniz Institute for the German Language in Mannheim, Germany, where he manages the project "Communicative Repertoire of Migrants." Previously, he worked on the project "Deutsch im Beruf: Die sprachlich-kommunikative Integration von Flüchtlingen" (German at Work: The Linguistic and Communicative Integration of Refugees) from 2016 to 2021 under Professors Eichinger, Lobin, and Deppermann.
Dr. Cindark earned his doctorate from the University of Mannheim in 2009 with a dissertation titled "Migration, Language and Racism: The Communicative Social Style of Mannheim's 'Minors' as a Case Study for 'Emancipatory Migrants'." His academic career includes research positions at the University of Koblenz-Landau, University of Mainz, and University of Duisburg-Essen, along with teaching appointments at the University of Mannheim and University of Heidelberg.
His research focuses on how migrants develop complex communicative repertoires across different contexts, employing ethnographic, videographic, and conversation analysis methods. He examines language use in workplace settings, particularly the linguistic integration of refugees, and has conducted fieldwork with various migrant communities in Germany.
Dr. Cindark's recent publications analyze digital communication practices on platforms like TikTok, workplace interactions between refugees and German instructors, and self-translation in multilingual workplaces. These works reflect his commitment to applying linguistic research to practical challenges in migration and integration contexts.
He is an active member of professional organizations including the "Netzwerk Fluchtforschung" (Refugee Research Network), the "Rat für Migration" (Council for Migration), and the "Gesellschaft für Angewandte Linguistik" (Society for Applied Linguistics).
Additionally, Dr. Cindark has collaborated on exhibition projects documenting migrant history in Germany, such as "gesternJahre - 50 Jahre gastArbeiter" and "mannheimJahre," demonstrating his dedication to making linguistic research accessible to the broader public.
