معرفی
Professor Ian Turner is a Director and Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). His research focuses on coastal processes, shoreline monitoring, and the development of early warning systems for coastal hazards. He has established himself as a leading expert in coastal engineering through decades of research and publication, with numerous contributions to understanding coastal dynamics and management strategies.
Professor Turner received his academic training at the University of Sydney, where he earned a BSc (Hons 1, University Medal) in Marine Science, followed by a PhD in Marine Science. He further expanded his expertise with a Master of Environmental Engineering Science in Coastal Engineering from the University of New South Wales. This strong foundation in both marine science and engineering has shaped his interdisciplinary approach to coastal research.
Professor Turner's research interests span several critical areas of coastal science and engineering. His work focuses on innovative measurements and monitoring of coastlines at various scales, from local to global. He has made significant contributions to forecasting coastal change and understanding the impacts of climate variability on shorelines. A key aspect of his recent work involves developing short-range coastal erosion forecasting systems and early warning capabilities to help communities prepare for coastal hazards. His research bridges fundamental coastal processes with practical applications for coastal management.
His extensive publication record reveals a strong emphasis on coastal morphodynamics, particularly dune erosion processes, shoreline change prediction, and the application of remote sensing technologies for coastal monitoring. Professor Turner has pioneered methods for extracting shoreline data from satellite imagery and has conducted influential research on how climate patterns like El Niño/Southern Oscillation affect coastal erosion across the Pacific region. His work demonstrates how large-scale climate patterns directly influence local coastal processes, providing critical insights for long-term coastal planning.
Professor Turner leads the Water Research Laboratory at UNSW Northern Beaches Campus (Manly Vale), where he conducts cutting-edge research on coastal processes. His team has developed advanced monitoring techniques and modeling approaches that have significantly enhanced our understanding of beach and dune dynamics during storm events. The laboratory serves as a hub for coastal research in Australia and collaborates with international partners on global coastal challenges, contributing to both scientific understanding and practical coastal management solutions.
