Christopher Stokes is a Visiting Research Fellow at the School of Biological and Marine Sciences, University of Plymouth. He serves as a Senior Research Consultant for the Coastal Marine Applied Research (CMAR) consultancy group since 2015, specializing in coastal processes consultancy for engineering infrastructure, coastal flooding, erosion, beach safety, and marine renewable energy impact assessments across multiple countries including the UK, New Zealand, and Cape Verde. His work emphasizes numerical modelling of coastal hazards and forecasting.
- PhD (2015): Investigated wave energy extraction impacts on beaches and water-users
Research focuses on coastal hazards mitigation, including rip current dynamics and coastal overtopping warnings through projects like the NERC-funded SWEEP initiative. Collaborates with NGOs like the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the National Trust. Has conducted 100+ beach surveys, storm response analyses, and social research. Authored 6 peer-reviewed articles and 2 conference papers, with presentations at 5 international conferences.
As an Impact Fellow for SWEEP (2017-2023), he co-developed a coastal overtopping warning system for southwest England and Wales. This £6.1M project (NERC + £11M business co-funding) aims to enhance economic and environmental resilience in the region.
