Ian Turner is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Yale University, affiliated with the Institution for Social and Policy Studies (ISPS), the Center for the Study of American Politics (CSAP), and the Leitner Program in Political Economy. His research focuses on American political institutions, bureaucratic politics, special interest politics, and formal political theory. He holds a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis (2015), an A.M. from the same institution (2012), and a B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh (2010).
Professor Turner’s research examines topics such as bureaucratic accountability, electoral dynamics, and the role of campaign finance in policy outcomes. His work has been published in top journals like the American Political Science Review and the American Journal of Political Science. He has received awards including the 2024 Poorvu Family Fund for Academic Innovation Award for Excellence in Teaching.
His teaching spans courses on game theory, formal models of accountability, and the intersection of money and politics. He advises numerous doctoral and undergraduate students, mentoring them on topics ranging from executive politics to bureaucratic implementation. Turner’s academic service includes roles on Yale’s Graduate Admissions Committee and leadership in formal theory training initiatives within the APSA.
Key research areas include the institutional foundations of presidential power, the effects of dark money in elections, and the strategic interactions between politicians, bureaucrats, and interest groups. His current book project explores the tensions between political control and accountability in the administrative state.
