Professor Ian Smith is an academic at City St George's, University of London, where he has served since 1962. He currently holds the rank of Professor of Applied Thermodynamics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His career spans over six decades, including a pivotal role in establishing the first MSc course in Mechanical Engineering at City and founding the Centre for Positive Displacement Compressor Technology in 1995 with Professor Nikola Stosic. This center is now a global leader in twin-screw machines, leading to the commercialization of Heliex Power Ltd. (2009).

Smith’s research focuses on power recovery from low-grade heat sources and screw compressor/expander technology. His work integrates computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with solid-fluid interaction models to optimize performance in systems like geothermal power plants and organic Rankine cycles. Over 190 publications and nine patents highlight his contributions.
His recent publications emphasize CFD-driven design improvements for twin-screw machines and thermodynamic modeling of geothermal systems. Awards include the Institution of Marine Engineers Silver Medal (1981), the James Clayton Prize (2006), and Geothermal Resources Council Best Paper (2004). He is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (2016) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (1982).
Smith’s advisory role extends to patents and the development of Heliex Power Ltd. He has mentored researchers like M.G. Read and E. Mujic, contributing to advancements in noise control, gas pulsation suppression, and refrigeration systems. His collaborative work with Nikola Stosic and Aleksandar Kovacevic has driven innovation in screw machine design for over three decades.
