Ian Rutherford is a Professor of Greek in the Department of Classics at the University of Reading, England. He has held significant academic roles, including Lecturer, Reader, and Head of Department at the University of Reading, and served as Visiting Professor at Florida State University (2003–2006). His career began with a Junior Research Fellowship at Trinity College (1985–88), followed by Assistant and Associate Professorships at Harvard University (1988–95), before his appointment as Professor in 2000.
- Education: D.Phil from Oxford University (1986), B.A. in Literae Humaniores (First Class Honours) from Corpus Christi College, Oxford (1981)
His research focuses on three primary areas: Greco-Roman religion, particularly pilgrimage, sacred travel, and religious networks; the interplay between Greek religion and ancient Anatolian traditions (Hittite and Luwian religions) via cuneiform texts; and the Greco-Roman reception of Egyptian religion. These themes bridge classical studies with interdisciplinary approaches to ancient cultural interactions.
During his KHK Fellowship (2017–2018), he pursued the project "Hittite Texts and Greek Religion. Interaction, Borrowing, Analogy," reflecting his cross-cultural scholarly interests.
- KHK Fellowship (Visiting Research Fellow, January 2017 – March 2018)
