Ian Roberts is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of Cambridge and a Professorial Fellow at Downing College, Cambridge since 2000. Previously, he held professorial roles at Universität Stuttgart (1996-2000) and the University of Wales, Bangor (1991-1996), and academic positions at the University of Geneva (1985-1991).

Roberts specializes in generative and comparative syntax across Germanic, Romance, English, and Celtic languages. His research focuses on historical/diachronic syntax, exploring syntactic structures and their evolution over time.
His grants include major AHRC-funded projects such as "Structure and Linearisation in Disharmonic Word Orders" (£875,000) and "The Null Subject Parameter and the Theory of Parameters" (£375,000). He has also received smaller grants for collaborative research in syntactic theory.
