Dr. Ian McCall is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on Translation Theory, Practical Translation Pedagogy, Audiovisual Translation, and French Literature. He holds a BA in French and German from Westfield College, University of London, and a PhD in French Literature from Queen Mary and Westfield College. Before joining Southampton, he worked in France as an assistant and lecteur at the University of Paris X. He currently supervises four PhD students in Modern Languages and teaches modules on Translation Theory and Practice, Audiovisual Subtitling, and French Language.
His research explores intertextuality in French literature, translational dynamics, and the intersection of filmic and literary narratives. Notable works include studies on Andreï Makine's post-Soviet narratives and the application of e-mentoring in language education. McCall maintains a second home in Haute-Marne, France, and frequently returns there for research and personal engagement.
Teaching responsibilities include foundational courses in translation studies and French language instruction. His recent publications (2005-2011) highlight interdisciplinary approaches to translation pedagogy and comparative literary analysis, with a focus on intertextual relationships across media and cultural contexts.
