Ian Marriott is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He has held this position since 2008 and previously served as Associate Professor (2004-2008) and Assistant Professor (2000-2004) at the same institution. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers in Microbial Immunology since 2011 and has been a Regular Member of the American Association of Immunologists since 1999.
Dr. Marriott's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Physiology (1996) from Tulane University School of Medicine
- M.S. in Physiology (1994) from Tulane University School of Medicine
- B.Sc. Honors in Biological Sciences (Physiology) (1989) from the University of Birmingham, UK
His research primarily focuses on immunology, particularly microbial immunology, neuroimmunology, and bone immunology. Dr. Marriott's work investigates how the neuropeptide substance P influences inflammatory responses in various contexts, including brain infections and bone diseases. He also studies how resident cells in the brain and bone recognize and respond to pathogens through pattern recognition receptors. His research has significant translational potential for treating inflammatory diseases.
Dr. Marriott's publications demonstrate consistent contributions to understanding the intersection of immunology with neuroscience and bone biology, with particular emphasis on how neuropeptides, pattern recognition receptors, and inflammatory pathways interact in response to bacterial and viral pathogens.
Scientific awards and honors:
- Leah Seidman Schaffer Award for Excellence in Postdoctoral Research, Tulane University School of Medicine (1998)
- Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research by a Postdoctoral Fellow, Tulane University School of Medicine (1998)
- UNCC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Award for the Integration of Undergraduate Teaching and Research (2017)
Dr. Marriott advises several students and postdoctoral fellows, including PhD candidates and graduate students in the Department of Biological Sciences. He has secured significant grant funding, including multiple NIH grants focusing on substance P in bone inflammation, type I interferon responses in bone cells, and glial responses to pathogens.
He leads a research laboratory that investigates neuroimmune interactions in bone and brain tissues, with current projects exploring how substance P exacerbates staphylococcal bone damage and how brain cells recognize bacterial and viral pathogens through pattern recognition receptors.
