Ian MacMullen is a Professor of Practice and Resident Scholar in the SNF Paideia Program at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences. Previously, he held roles as Assistant Vice Provost at Duke University's Office of Undergraduate Education and tenured Associate Professor of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis. He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University and B.A. in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University.
His research focuses on civic education, citizenship, religious pluralism, and contemporary political challenges such as post-truth politics. Current projects examine the relational costs of legal enforcement against dissenters and the conceptualization of post-factual governance. He has authored two books: Civics Beyond Critics (Oxford UP, 2015) and Faith in Schools? (Princeton UP, 2007), and contributes to journals like the Journal of Political Philosophy and Journal of Politics.
MacMullen leads initiatives such as the Political Empathy Lab (PEL) and participates in the Red & Blue Exchange program. His work bridges academia and public engagement through courses on citizenship and democracy, emphasizing dialogue in politically divided contexts.
