Ian M. Shapiro

Ian M. Shapiro is a Professor of Practice at Syracuse University, associated with the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems. He serves as Associate Director of Building Science and Community Programs. His expertise focuses on heat pumps, green building design, and affordable carbon reduction strategies. Shapiro has contributed to heat pump innovation at Carrier Corporation, authored foundational heat pump theory, and holds multiple patents in HVAC technology.

Education & Background: Founded Taitem Engineering (Ithaca, NY), a successful consulting firm where he remains a partner and board member.

Research Interests: Heat pump optimization (air/water source, vertical stack), building shape efficiency metrics, energy code development emphasizing affordability. He developed the Ithaca Energy Code Supplement requiring 80% lower carbon emissions in new buildings by 2026.
