Professor Sir Ian L Boyd is a marine and polar scientist serving as a Professor at the University of St Andrews' School of Biology. He held the role of Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government on Food and the Environment for seven years and currently chairs the UK Research Integrity Office and leads the Royal Society of Biology as its President. His advisory roles include membership in SAGE during the pandemic and co-chairing Scotland’s Environment Council. He previously directed the Sea Mammal Research Unit and the Scottish Oceans Institute, focusing on marine conservation, climate policy, and sustainability. Educated at the University of Aberdeen (Zoology) and Cambridge (PhD), he was knighted in 2019 for contributions to science and economics in government.
His research interests span marine mammal ecology, climate change mitigation, and the integration of science into public policy. Recent articles highlight pandemic strategy analysis, marine protected area efficacy, and sustainable development. Boyd has received prestigious awards, including the Bruce Medal for Polar Science and the Polar Medal. He chairs St Andrews’ Environmental Sustainability Board, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2035. His career bridges academia, government, and conservation, emphasizing evidence-based solutions to global challenges.
