Ian Kiaer is an Associate Professor of Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford, and a Tutorial Fellow at Brasenose College. His artistic practice involves creating fragile installations that combine architectural models, found objects, and two-dimensional work to explore utopian ideas and fragmented narratives.
Kiaer's research examines how models can inform understanding of painting as a 'minor form', investigating concepts like tone and timbre operating at the fringes of artistic practice. His doctoral thesis explored the house as a model of thought through case studies including Casa Malaparte and Wittgenstein's Kundmangasse.
Kiaer has exhibited internationally since 2000, with solo exhibitions at institutions including Tate Britain, Kunstverein München, and Fondazione Querini Stampalia. He has participated in major biennials including Venice, Istanbul, Berlin, Lyon, and Manifesta. His scholarly monographs include publications from Henry Moore Institute and Aspen Art Museum.
