Ian Kemish

Ian Kemish is a former senior Australian diplomat and business executive, currently serving as an Adjunct Professor in History at the University of Queensland. He has held high-level roles such as High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Ambassador to Germany, and led the Australian Consular Service from 2000-2004. His work focuses on Pacific diplomacy, sustainability, and post-conflict resolution, with a particular emphasis on Bougainville and Southeast Asian history.

His research interests span Pacific Studies, Diplomacy, and Conflict Resolution, informed by decades of experience in international relations and crisis management. His publications analyze post-conflict governance, resource sustainability, and regional security dynamics.

Kemish has authored key works including The Consul (2022) and policy papers on Bougainville’s political future. His expertise has been instrumental in shaping discussions on diplomatic neutrality, economic development, and multilateral engagement in the Indo-Pacific.
