Professor Ian Jones is a Professor of Psychiatry and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at Cardiff University, with an additional role as Honorary Professor at the University of Worcester since 2016. He is a core member of the Mood Disorders Research Group and co-leads the UK Bipolar Disorder Research Network (BDRN) with Professor Lisa Jones. His research focuses on bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis, with over 200 publications and significant contributions to clinical guidelines such as the Bipolar Education Programme Cymru (BEP-C), which won a BMJ innovation award in 2014.
Education: Graduated from St George’s Medical School in London, trained in General Medicine and Psychiatry in South Wales, and completed a Wellcome Trust Training Fellowship at the University of Birmingham with international collaboration at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Research Interests: Prioritizes genomic and clinical studies of bipolar disorder, postpartum psychosis, and the genetic epidemiology of mood disorders. His work integrates clinical research with large-scale genomic analyses to identify risk factors and improve diagnostic clarity.
Scientific Achievements: Awarded the Marcé Medal for postpartum psychosis research and recognized as Academic Psychiatrist of the Year (2013). The BDRN, co-founded with Lisa Jones, maintains one of the largest global research cohorts for bipolar disorder (7,500 individuals).
Advising & Grants: Leads multidisciplinary teams in Cardiff and Worcester, with funding from Wellcome Trust and Stanley Medical Research Institute. His work emphasizes translational research connecting genetic findings to clinical practice.
