Professor Ian J. Miller serves as Reischauer Institute Professor of Environmental History at Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of History, and concurrently as Faculty Dean of Cabot House. His work bridges Japanese imperial history with global environmental transformations through innovative archival research.
His research centers on environmental history and energy systems, examining Tokyo's development through TEPCO archives and Fukushima's legacy. Current projects include Fueling Tokyo: Japan in the Age of Global Energy, reframing urban history through energy infrastructure. He co-founded the Energy History Project with MIT and directs interdisciplinary work on carbon transitions.
