Dr. Ian Hartley is a Professor in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), affiliated with the Ecosystem Science and Management program, Forest Ecology and Management group, NRES Graduate Program, and has academic ties to Physics. He is currently on leave but remains an active supervisor for graduate students.
His research focuses on wood quality and wood physics, particularly examining wood ultrastructure, anatomy, and the physical interactions between wood and water. His work includes studies on diffusion, sorption, lumber drying processes, and the application of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to understand wood behavior in the context of forest products in Northern British Columbia.
Dr. Hartley is currently accepting graduate students and supervises both MSc and PhD candidates in the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (NRES) program.
His research bridges disciplines in forestry and applied physics, contributing to sustainable forest product development and processing optimization.
- Research Fields: Forestry, Physics
Dr. Hartley advises graduate students in the NRES program and continues to contribute to research in wood science despite being on leave. No specific grants are mentioned, but his work implies industry and environmental applications in northern forest management.
He maintains a research presence through his website: http://web.unbc.ca/~hartley.
