Professor Ian Hardy is a distinguished academic at the University of Helsinki, holding a position in the Department of Agricultural Sciences within the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. He serves as a Supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources (AGFOREE), contributing to advanced research training in agricultural and environmental sciences.
Hardy's research spans fundamental evolutionary biology, population ecology, and behavioral ecology, with strong applications to agricultural pest management. His primary focus is on parasitoid wasps, particularly examining their behavior, reproductive strategies, and potential as biological control agents. His work encompasses contest behavior, sex ratios, mating systems, social behavior in insects, and the dynamics of host-parasitoid interactions. He also maintains interests in conservation ecology, particularly regarding African wildlife, and biostatistical approaches to ecological questions.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the behavioral ecology of parasitoid wasps, with particular attention to social behavior in quasi-social species, host selection strategies, and the application of these findings to biological control programs. His work bridges fundamental evolutionary questions with practical agricultural applications, demonstrating how understanding natural systems can inform sustainable pest management approaches.

Professor Hardy actively supervises doctoral students through the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources and the Doctoral Programme in Wildlife Biology at the University of Helsinki. His research projects include 'Apple Food Web/Luomuinstituutti' (2024-2025) and previous collaborations with the Hebrew University Institute of Advanced Studies in Jerusalem (2022). His work often involves international collaborations, as evidenced by his numerous co-authored publications with researchers from around the globe.
Hardy maintains active research teams focusing on parasitoid behavior and biological control applications, with recent work examining trophic interactions in agricultural systems, the effects of pesticides on beneficial insects, and conservation approaches for threatened species. His research combines laboratory experiments, field studies, and theoretical modeling to address both fundamental questions in evolutionary ecology and practical challenges in sustainable agriculture.
