Dr. Ian H. Gotlib is the Marjorie Mhoon Fair Professor and Director of the Stanford Neurodevelopment, Affect, and Psychopathology (SNAP) Laboratory at Stanford University. He served as Chair of Stanford’s Psychology Department (2012–2018) and Senior Associate Dean for Social Sciences (2005–2010). Dr. Gotlib holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Waterloo (1981).

Research Interests: Dr. Gotlib’s work focuses on psychological and biological factors contributing to depression, anxiety, and suicidal behaviors. His studies span neurodevelopmental processes, early life stress, maternal-child health, and environmental impacts (e.g., air pollution) on brain structure and mental health. He integrates cognitive, social, endocrinological, and genetic approaches to identify risk markers and protective mechanisms.
Scientific Awards: Dr. Gotlib has received the Distinguished Investigator Award (NARSAD), Joseph Zubin Award (psychopathology), APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award, APS Distinguished Scientist Award, and a NIMH MERIT Award. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Association for Psychological Science, and American Psychopathological Association.
Advisees: Dr. Gotlib mentors doctoral students Chase Antonacci, Kendall Parks, and Yoonji Lee, and serves as a postdoctoral sponsor for Jessica Buthmann, Sarah Rocha, and Jessica Uy.
