Dr. Ian Grange is an Associate Professor in Environment & Countryside Management at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU), where he holds roles on the Academic Board, Validation Review Board, and Academic Management Group. He is Programme Manager for the FdSc Wildlife Conservation & Countryside Management and BSc (Hons) Wildlife & Countryside Management top-up. His academic qualifications include a PhD from the University of Sydney, MSc from the University of Aberdeen, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) from the University of Gloucestershire.
Research Interests: Dr. Grange’s work focuses on carbon sequestration in agricultural and natural ecosystems, soil management, invasive species control (e.g., bracken), and conservation grazing. He leads long-term studies on bracken management, hedgerow carbon storage, and soil carbon dynamics. His research also addresses climate change mitigation through land use policies and sustainable farming practices.
Teaching and Supervision: He teaches modules in Conservation, Ecological Consultancy, and Land Management, and has supervised multiple graduate students, including Sally Westaway (PhD), Matthew Axe (completed 2015), and Helen King (MSc, 2022). His work-based placements and external examiner roles span UK institutions like the University of East Anglia and Harper Adams University.
Awards and Recognition: His research has been recognized with awards, including the 2018 Best Conference Poster Prize for hedgerow carbon sequestration work. He has contributed to international projects, such as the Sino-EU Agri-Tech initiative in China and soil carbon protocols in Australia.
