Ian Forbes

Ian Forbes is an Associate Professor at Northumbria University's Department of Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering. He holds a PhD in Physics (Northumbria University, 1994), a PGDip in Optoelectronics (Newcastle Polytechnic, 1986), and a BSc in Materials Technology (University of Surrey, 1984). Previously, he worked at GEC Optical Fibres Ltd (1984–1985). His research focuses on photovoltaic materials, thin films, and renewable energy technologies, with over 119 publications and 2,859 citations. He is accepting PhD students and has delivered invited talks on topics like photovoltaic technologies and clean energy innovations.

He co-leads the Training Hub for Renewable Energy Technologies in Sri Lanka (THREE-Lanka) (European Commission-funded, 2021–2024) and contributed to a Lingusitics Course (2020). His work emphasizes materials like Cu₂ZnSnSe₄ for solar cells and energy prediction models for PV systems.
