Dr. Ian Denholm is a Professor in the Agriculture, Food and Veterinary Sciences department at the University of Hertfordshire's School of Life and Medical Sciences. He leads research within the Crop Protection and Climate Change Centre for Agriculture, Food and Environmental Management.
His research spans two primary domains:
- Agricultural Entomology: Development of integrated pest management strategies, analysis of insecticide resistance risks (particularly in aphids like Myzus persicae), and environmental impact assessments of GM crops
- Botanical Systematics: Taxonomic studies of UK terrestrial orchids, with recent focus on marsh-orchids in Scotland and Canada using genetic markers
Analysis of his 178 publications (1993-2024) reveals a strategic shift from intensive entomology research (peaking 2003-2009) toward botanical systematics in recent years, while maintaining core expertise in pesticide resistance mechanisms. His work consistently addresses critical intersections between agricultural practices and environmental sustainability.
Key collaborations include the 2017-2020 project on soil biodiversity impacts of tillage practices. His research fingerprint highlights dominant expertise in neonicotinoids (100%), insecticide resistance (93%), and aphid pest management (73%).
Professor Denholm maintains active field research through the Hertfordshire Natural History Society, documenting regional flora and contributing to conservation efforts. His dual foundation in genetics (PhD, Liverpool) and zoology (B.Sc., Manchester) enables his distinctive interdisciplinary approach to agricultural and environmental challenges.
